This year we’ have a radical new idea for having a green Christmas: buy used! Why would you want to forgo the traditional purchasing of brand new gifts? First, it takes the pressure off of gift giving; let your friends and family know ahead of time that you’re committing to buying used this year and neither of you have to worry about buying the “hottest” Christmas gift of the year. You can also start a new, sustainable tradition in your family that helps save the Earth, have fun getting creative with your “no new gifts” motto, support small businesses and individuals instead of multi-national corporations, and save lots of money, too. And when you’re putting some real thought into gift ideas, you’re much more likely to buy presents that your loved ones will really love.
Remember, you can buy just about anything online “used”, but in like-new condition. No matter what gifts are on your Christmas shopping list, you can probably find them in awesome used condition. You can even buy online to save time and a trip to the mall.

Some categories are already “used” by default, such as Vintage Clothing or Antique Jewelry.
Even this year’s “hottest” gifts can be bought used, like DVD box sets and video game consoles like Wii or xbox 360.
Another amazing resource is your local Craigslist. Find everything from electronics collectibles, cars, pets or even experience gifts like massages or spa treatments. Check out the Free section and pick up some silly stocking stuffers!
While everybody else is battling the mall crowd, you can do your eco friendly Christmas shopping in peace at your local thrift store. Thrift shopping can be hit or miss depending on the day and the store, but there are some real treasures hidden there! Check out thrift store ratings at Thrift Shopper or Yelp to get an idea of which store will be best for you. Some specialize in name brand clothing while others have amazing furniture or toys.
