I’ll admit it: we at Mable’s are totally biased when it comes to Star Wars. We love the original and prequel trilogies, and wish there were more days in the year where dressing in your favorite Star Wars costume was encouraged. Thank goodness for Halloween!
Even if you have only a passing familiarity with the Star Wars movies, you know there are not just many characters but many costume changes as well. The Imperials don’t change much, but the Rebels and other good guys have lots of different costumes and hair styles, as well as small accessory differences through the movies. Queen Amidala changes outfits every 5 seconds or so and has a total of 34 costumes during Episodes I-III! If you’re interested in authenticity there several Supreme costumes that are incredibly detailed and are priced accordingly. They’re absolutely fantastic quality and will win any costume contest! We also recommend homemade costumes if you have the time and patience, because they are usually the most impressive. See our list of recommended custom costume makers at the top right of this page.
Below is a list of the most popular Star Wars costumes, along with our tips and suggested online resources for creating a great costume;

Jedi Costume |
Jedi Costume
The most popular of all Star Wars costumes: the Jedi! This is a great costume idea because it will fit all body types, keeps you warm during the cold autumn night, and isn’t too expensive. Pre-made costumes generally include the tunics, tabbards, pants, belt, and boot covers, with an optional jedi robe. Lightsabers purchased separately.
Visit Speedy Stitches or one of our other recommended custom costume merchants for superior quality jedi robes and costumes.

Darth Vader Costume |
Darth Vader Costume
The Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, makes for one very impressive costume. Halloween 2005 was the first year that a supreme edition Darth Vader costume has been available and it looks fantastic! To look like even a sort-of-decent Vader be prepared to spend at least a few hundred, as it’s the most pricey Star Wars costume there is. Then again, you’ll probably win all that back at a few costume contests! Click below to buy the Supreme Edition costume, or read more info about Darth Vader costumes here.

Stormtrooper Costume |
Stormtrooper Costume
They may have horrible aim with a blaster and be one of the most expendable characters in the Star Wars galaxy, but everyone still wants a Stormtrooper costume. Why? Because they look tough as heck with all that white armour, ominous helmets, and big blasters. Unfortunately, the ready-made stormtrooper costumes look pretty bad. It’s more of a hassle to reproduce armour than cloth so (as you can see to your left) the adult costume is mostly cloth. If you’re serious about buying an impressive replica quality costume then be sure to check out eBay.

Clone Trooper Costume |
Clone Trooper Costume
Thanks to the release of Episode III you won’t have any trouble finding a Clone Trooper costume. The best adult costume is featured to the left and has a semi-soft full helmet and attached plastic armor. For a few dollars less there is a "Deluxe" version with blue accents, a front-only mask held on by a rubber band, and no gloves. Augment either costume with a deluxe Clone Trooper mask and you’ll be ready to assist (or murderously betray) any Jedis you encounter.

Princess Leia Costume |
Princess Leia Costume
Did you ever notice how Princess Leia has only 2 styles of costumes? Either she is showing only her hands and face (see left), or she is nearly naked in her "slave Leia metal bikini"! The most popular style is from A New Hope: the hooded, white, floor length dress and cinnamon bun hairstyle. You can either purchase a Deluxe or "Xtra Value" ready-made Leia costume or (with just minimal sewing skills) make your own with the new Leia sewing pattern. If you can knit, you can make your own Leia hat complete with buns!

Luke Skywalker Costume |
Luke Skywalker Costume
Poor Luke. First his aunt and uncle get incinerated by the Empire and now Lucas won’t even make him a licensed costume. Sadly, there are no longer any ready-made Luke Skywalker costumes available. You can either purchase a custom costume (check eBay) or get a Jedi costume and make a couple changes. Luke’s outfit is similar to Jedis like Obi-Wan, but he wears just 1 instead of 2 tunics. Also, his boots are light beige rather than brown. His belt is also different. Add a 70’s dude or surfer dude wig, whine every 10 seconds, and you’ll be a pretty convincing Luke!

Queen Amidala Costume |
Queen Amidala Costume
Of the 34 costumes that Padme Amidala wears in the prequel trilogy, this red Queen’s outfit is 1 of only 2 licensed costume available (scroll down for the other). As Queen Amidala, Padme wears this ornate and regal lighted dress and headpiece. This is the "Better" version, but the super-ultra-fantastic Supreme Edition costume blows this out of the water. Another definite costume contest winner!

Darth Maul Costume |
Darth Maul Costume
Shown in only one of the movies (where he was later sliced in half), Darth Maul is still everyone’s favorite Zabrak Sith Lord. His all-black outfit, double ended lightsaber, horns, and intricate facial tattoos make him an intimidating character to behold. The adult costumes come in Regular, Deluxe, and Super Deluxe versions, as well as a full latex mask. Double ended lightsaber sold separately.

Anakin Skywalker Costume |
Anakin Skywalker Costume
In Episode III Anakin Skywalker is no longer a padawan, but a full jedi. He ditched his braid and beige outfit for longer hair and a black and dark brown jedi outfit. Just add the gauntlet (to cover your robotic hand), blue lightsaber and a scar over your right eye. Very impressive custom Anakin Skywalker costumes are available from Speedy Stitches and a few other sellers from our recommended custom costume merchant list.

Jango Fett Costume |
Jango Fett Costume
Ah, Jango, just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe. Technically, Jango Fett was only in Episode II, but his clones made up the entire Republic Army in Episode III, and Boba Fett in several movies. That bounty hunter gets around! Such a fearsome bad guy deserves a good costume, so we’re only going to mention the Deluxe version, which looks pretty amazing for the price. Optional gun and deluxe helmet also available.

Obi Wan Costume |
Obi Wan Costume
Just like Stormtroopers, Obi Wan got ripped off in the costume department. There are 2 adult versions available and both are fairly hideous. The one with the brown belt (seen at left) is the better of the 2. Custom made Obi Wan costumes from Speedy Stitches are light years ahead in quality and style. Blue lightsaber sold separately.

Chewbacca Costume |
Chewbacca Costume
As we get to see in Episode III-VI, wookies live a long time. Since he has been around for so many years, it’s really way overdue that Lucas made a Chewbacca costume. There is finally a replica quality Supreme Edition (aka: the guaranteed costume contest winner), a good quality Deluxe version, and a very impressive Super Deluxe mask. In this costume, prepare to make everyone suggest they "let the wookie win".

Padme Costume |
Padme Costume
The full body battle costume that Padme Amidala wears in Episode II is simple yet stunning. The tight head-to-toe white outfit really flatters a toned body and is inexpensive to buy or make (see the new Padme sewing pattern). It also comes with a shawl to keep you warm on autumn nights, but the blaster gun is sold separately.
